Postcard from California
IT had been put to Camden Labour that an open hustings in their Holborn and St Pancras selection contest would be a good idea, given the significant interest in who wins that exists beyond the membership. In the end, it was hard to work out if there was anybody outside of the party at the Working Men’s College on Tuesday evening.
So where was former Lib Dem councillor Paul Braithwaite, who had been one of those calling for this open-to-all event? I emailed him during the hustings to ask about his no show and before the session had even come to a close he had replied. On holiday in California, he reported, before securing extra smug points by attaching a photo. “I hate the hire car,” he insisted.
A white van man, he isn’t.
Yes, I was miffed to not be able to attend the open hustings. But I was on a swift one week trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco to visit four friends (and see all the new films). I couldn’t cycle the 500 miles between homes in such a short time – though over the years I’ve had about 20 biking holidays in the USA. But the “mucle car” was horrid to drive at not “me” at all.
I am back now.
