Sherlock Woz Ere

January 12, 2012

WHO wants to pretend they live in Sherlock Holmes’s flat?

And you don’t even head to the real Baker Street to do it.

On the rental market right now is the flat above Speedy’s, the cafe regularly seen in the BBC’s Sherlock, the updated version of the great detective stories which have proved to be a Sunday night telly hit. You know the stories have been updated because Dr Watson has a blog.

Of course, the scenes inside Sherlock’s flat in the Benedict Cumberbatch version were filmed in studios elsewhere but he is often spotted coming out of this property as if the flat above the cafe in North Gower Street, near Euston was his – the road nameplates, of course, being mocked up as ‘Baker Street’ when the cameras are rolling.

This game of Let’s Pretend costs £330 a week for a one bedroom flat ‘ideal for a couple’. The bonus is Speedy’s serves up a fine pasta arrabiata downstairs, and a not too rusty apple pie and custard for afters. And you can play detective yourself by seeing if you can spot lawyers from Hodge, Jones and Allen, based opposite, chugging down chips in there. Smart shoes, suit, that kind of thing. Elementary.

Add to that the esteem of living next to the blue plaque home of the “soul of Italy” and revolutionary hero, Giuseppe Mazzini. He lived next door to the Sherlock house and Speedy’s cafe in 1837, but according to his biogrpahy they were “very poor economic conditions”.
