Return of the Eco Champ… and this time he’s batting for The Green Party

IN the small world of Camden Council politics, this is pretty big news: Former Liberal Democrat councillor Alexis Rowell, who held the post as ‘eco-champion’ under the Lib Dem and Conservative coalition (2006-10), is to stand for THE GREEN PARTY in the upcoming Highgate by-election. He’s been selected by the group tonight in a move which rather steals the thunder of Labour’s own appointment of Sally Gimson to the race. What a contest this will be.

Which party was Alexis previously a member of, before the Lib Dems? Sarah Hayward, Camden Labour councillor, alleges he is a “serial defector” – which, if true, would blow a hole in the credibility the Greens would hope Alexis could bring them as a high-profile defector.

He was a member of the Labour party until 2005.
